 "Lähellä sydäntä" Löysin Art Hotel Laineen keväällä 2009. Sen jälkeen ei Riikasta muita majoituspaikkoja olekaan ollut tarvis etsiä. Ihanteellinen pieni hotelli: Yksityinen, persoonallinen hotelli mitä rauhallisimmalla Skolas iela -sivukadulla, mutta kuitenkin aivan keskustan tuntumassa. Riikan suuret puistot alkavat ihan vierestä. Miljoonakaupunki Riika, tuo "Baltian Pariisi", ottaa vuosi vuodelta enemmän ja enemmän takaisin perinteistä asemaansa Baltian johtavana metropolina. Meno keskustassa on sitten sen mukaista, hektistä. Kuitenkin vain kivenheiton päässä suurkaupungin hyörinästä ja vilskeestä, uneliaalla lähetystöalueella Valdemara- ja Brivibas -katujen välissä, loistaa Laine -hotellin keltainen kyltti kutsuvana. Tuntui heti siltä kuin olisi tullut kotiin. Jotenkin tutunoloinen kaupunki tämä Riika, muinaisten suomensukuisten liiviläisten asuinpaikka, on muutenkin: Iso osa keskustan rakennuskannasta Jugendia, kuten Helsingin eteläisissä kaupunginosissa. Maksamista tarkoittava sana sama kuin meillä: "Maksa! Maksa!". Art Hotel Laineen vuonna 1912 rakennetun Art Nouveau -talon (sitä tyyliäkin Riikassa riittää) piharakennuksen useampaan kerrokseen levittäytynyt hotelli tarjoaa hyvän hinta / laatusuhteen. Käytännössä vähintäin puolet huonehinnosta pois ydinkeskustan turistihotelleihin verrattuna. Tilavat, siistit huoneet. Ystävällinen, avulias henkilökunta. Yöpyjille ilmaista vapaata autojen pysäköintitilaa. Mainio ravintola, jossa myös edullinen lounas. Talvella 2010 kolmen ruokalajin lounas maksoi muutaman euron. Samalla hinnalla Riikan keskustan edullisistakin ruokapaikoista saa tavanomaisesti vain pelkän pääruuan. Yksi asia, jota Laineessa arvostan, on nettiyhteys. Useimmissa hotelleissa julkinen internet -piste sijaitsee aulassa, jolloin keskittyminen on mahdotonta. Aina on joku kurkkimassa selän takana. Laineessa sitävastoin pari maksutonta nettipistettä sijaitsevat konferenssihuoneissa. Joskus on tullut istuttua työskentelemässä siellä tuntikausia! Ylellistä! Ensimmäisellä visiitilläni Laineeseen unohdin sinne matkalukemisen - August Strindbergin "Punaisen huoneen". Juuri kun tarina oli päässyt hyvään vaiheeseen! Kyllä harmitti! Ei muuta kun meili Laineeseen. Siivooja oli löytänyt opuksen vällyjen välistä, ja muutaman kuukauden kuluttua Riikassa ojennettiin romaani Laineen respasta takaisin käteen. - Augustin stoori muuten vain parani loppua kohti! Laineessa on leppoisa pienen yksityisen hotellin tunnelma. Kaikki toimii ja asiat hoituvat luonnikkaasti. Muutama esimerkki: - Kerran tuli kysyttyä tarjoilijalta lounaalla, mitäköhän lihaa ruokalistan annoksessa on käytetty. Hän nauroi ja piirsi pupujussin kuvan servetille! Selvä! - Asiaa johtajalle? Tuossahan tuo naapuripöydässä lusikoi soppaa. - Hmmmm, houkuttelevan näköisiä omppuja tuossa tiskillä. Saisinko ottaa pari, mitä ne maksavat? Tarjoilija: "Eivät mitään, syö pois vaan. Toin ne aamulla omasta puutarhastani!". - Yhtenä iltana heräsi kysymys, löytyisikö lähistöltä kuntosalia. Aamulla odotti respassa Riikan kartta, johon kolme vaihtoehtoa oli merkitty. Helppoa, yksinkertaista - kun vaan asenne on kohdallaan. Kuten Art Hotel Laineessa on. |

"Close to the Heart" I was lucky to find Art Hotel Laine in the Spring of 2009. After that, no reason to search for other accomodation from Riga. A small privately owned hotel ideally located very near to the center, but nevertheless on the quiet, peaceful Skolas iela -street. Riga's spacious parks start just a few hundred meters away. Riga, the "Paris of the North", is slowly but surely regaining its old position as the leading Metropole of the Baltics. Thus, the life and traffic in downtown Riga are hectic, indeed. But only a stonecast away from Riga's bustling center the yellow sign of Art Hotel Laine glows invitingly. The surroundings are a peaceful embassy district. Arriving to the Laine Hotel first time felt like a homecoming. Also Riga itself, the ancient home of the fenno-ugric Liivi people, has a very familiar athmosphere. A large part of the buildings are of the same style and epoch as the buildings in Southern Helsinki: Jugend. The word for "pay" is the fenno-ugric "Maksa!". Sounds very familiar to the Finnish and Estonian ears... ;-) Art Hotel Laine, situated in several floors of an Art Nouveau building from 1912, offers a spledid price per quality -ratio. Practically, you can count about a half off the prices of the downtown tourist hotels. Spacious, tidy rooms. Friendly, helpful staff. Free parking space available nearby. A splendid restaurant which also serves delicious lunches. In the winter of 2010 the price of a three course lunch was a few euros, about the same as you would have to pay for the main course alone in most lunchrooms in Riga. The detail I especially value in Laine is the internet connection. In most hotels, the internet point is situated somewhere in the lobby. This means there is usually always somebody waiting in line for his/her turn, and concentration while in the internet is impossible. This is not the case in Laine. A couple of free internet terminals are located in the conference rooms. I've sat down working there for hours. Luxurious! When visiting Laine for the first time, I forgot my book - August Strindberg's classic "The Red Room" - there. Exactly when the story had developed into a very interesting phase. How annoying! So, an e-mail to Laine, and the next time in Riga, the novel was handed back from the reception. - By the way, the story got even better towards the end! Art Hotel Laine has the cozy athmosphere of a small privately owned family hotel. No bureaucracy - things are taken care of promptly and with ease. A few examples: - Once I was curious to ask the waitress what kind of meat was for lunch. She started to laugh and draw the siluett of a rabbit to the serviette. Clear! - Want to have a word with the manager? No problem, he is sitting there just nearby enjoying his soup! - Hmmmm... Tempting apples there at the counter. Could I buy a few? "Help your self, free of charge", replies the waitress. "I picked them up this morning from my garden!". - One evening, the question rose as if there would be a gym somewhere nearby for tomorrow. Next morning, the receptionist handed a map of Riga with three alternatives marked. Nice and simple. If the attitude is right - as it is in Art Hotel Laine. |
