My favourite guesthouse in the beautiful Middle-Estonian
city of Viljandi. I was lucky to find Endla in winter 2004, and
have not had to search for other places to sleep in Viljandi since.
Situated in the center of Viljandi, only a few steps from the
ANTTILA supermarket. Nevertheless in a peaceful neighbourhood,
on a quiet street lined by hardwood trees.
Reasonable prices. When visiting Estonia, I hardly ever stay
overnight in Tallinn, recently often called "Southern Helsinki".
It's better to jump on a bus and continue for example to Viljandi
for spending the night. The price-level drops dramatically, and
the athmosphere is much more pleasing, Tallinn being nowadays
maybe an even more hectic metropole than Helsinki.
I especially appreciate the services of Endla's cafe/restaurant.
After checking in and quickly carrying your luggage upstairs,
it's such a joy to sit down and order a tasty, local beer and
for example one of my favourite meals, chicken with roasted potatoes.
Aaaah! Finish it with a coffee together with a divine Moldovian
Belyi Aist -brandy and some cake. A hard day's night! And it all
costs about the same as a simple lunch with water in Helsinki.
Viljandi is a conveniently small, picturesque, historical 700
years old town. Among the "obligatory" sights one finds
the ruins of the old knight's castle on top of the nearby hill.
From the beautiful park up there you can enjoy a splendid view
towards the city as well as Lake Viljandi. The famous suspended
bridge in the park is also one of Viljandi's attractions. The
pics in the picture postcard above were taken from the ruins and
from atop the old, renovated water-tower from 1911 which is located
in the town itself.
The cosy rooms of Endla Hotell are equipped with a shower,
a WC and a TV -set. Call me crazy, but I love just to lay in bed
upstairs during a stormy Autumn night in Endla listening to the
raindrops pouring upon the roof...During summer months Endla offers
an expansive courtyard with a children's playground. And it's
a pleasure to have a swim in the nearby Lake Viljandi on a warm,
moist August night, the full moon being up...The cafe features
a terrace below the shady trees in the summertime.
Among the additional services: Flat-iron, laundry services (delivery
next day), internet.
The bus- and taxi company "Reinup Reisid" operates
in the same house - ask for an offer!
Another attraction worth mentioning in Viljandi is Uueveski Holiday
Center (www.uueveski.ee). This center located in beautiful surroundings
offers swimming pools for adults as well as children. Possibility
to fish and prepare trout by grilling or smoking. A sauna. Different
ball games.
In the vicinity of Viljandi you find the Soomaa Nature Park and
Lake Võrtsijärv, famous for its freshwater eels. Typical
for Soomaa are timeless forests, boundless swamps, beautiful meadows
with ponds and flooding rivers.
