PANGA
PUHKETALO - your holiday home at the tip of Panga cape, on the
island of Saaremaa. One of Estonia's most beautiful places. An
ideal holiday choice for nature lovers. The high Panga cliff is
a part of Estonia's national scenery.
I found Panga a few years ago, while having a bicyckle trip from
Mustjala and Võhma.
What a joy to jump into the refreshing sea at Panga, after a
long day of cyckling on the gravel roads and blacktops of Saaremaa!
Many splendid perch-meals enjoyed here have left a lasting impression.
Fresh fish, roasted potatoes and delicious Estonian beer - aaah!
Also, the joys of some memorable foto-sessions: Birds, orchids,
cowslips, fabulous sunsets towards the clear view all the way
to Finland...
Plenty of swans here even on the afternoon of New Year's Eve:
Cold, sunny, windy. I'm standing at Panga's cliff when the forthcoming
flock of swans' yell starts to hear.
They are flying in a formation above the sea, some fifty metres
away, towards the Tagaranna cape, back of which the sun is beginning
to set... What a year it was, 2003, and this is how it ends...
Panga Puhketalu offers also hunting- and fishing trips, organized
in co-operation with the local hunting society. Among the quarry:
wild boar, duck and goose.
Before supper you can have a sauna at Puhketalu.
Game- and fishfood make naturally the basis of the kitchen's
menu. Meals arranged for groups by order. Panga has capacity to
accommodate a group of thirty persons at a time.
Maybe the most dramatic time to visit Saaremaa is at spring,
when everything is starting to grow and bloom again. The fields
and meadows are rich with orchids, lily of the valleys, blue-
white and yellow anemones etc.
Bicyckle rental is also one of Panga Puhketalu's services. A
suitable destination are the remnants of an old ground-fortress,
Paatsa maalinna. Another place worth visiting is the Küdema
Kurisu ravine, where a small river actually disappears into the
ground! And in May one finds pasque flowers at Küdema.
Also, an intresting destination is Lake Karujärvi. After
a hot, sweaty day on the bike it's a heavenly pleasure to jump
into the sweet waters of Karujärvi. A camping site, a kiosk
and snacks are available.
The forests of Saaremaa are also abundant with wild berries:
cranberry, blueberry, strawberry, lingonberry and raspberry are
all waiting here for their pickers!
Regarding mushrooms you could mention milk caps and boletus.
And on the nearby meadows during white summernights, one understands
how perfectly Georg Ots captured the essence of Saaremaa's soul
in his famous song "Saaremaa Walz". |
