Löysin Krakovan Hostel Decon lokakuussa 2006.

Saapuminen ensi kertaa Krakovaan oli kuin kotiinsa olisi palannut: Varsovan jälkeen kotoisen oloinen, paljon rauhallisempi kaupunki.

Niin paljon enemmän vanhaa rakennuskantaa, historiaa, kulttuuria. Varsovahan tuhoutui pahoin sodan melskeissä, ja nykymeno Puolan uudelleen rakennetussa pääkaupungissa muistuttaa jotakin "amerikkalaistyyppistä Moskovaa".

Krakova sensijaan henkii vanhaa keski-eurooppalaisuutta. Matkalla tänne junatuttavuus kertoi, että Isä Aurinkoinen, Generalissimus Josef Stalin ehti jo antaa Krakovaa koskevan tuhoamiskäskyn. Asianomainen kenraali oli kuitenkin sattumoisin siviiliammatiltaan arkkitehti, ja luikerteli jotenkin käskystä eroon... Mene tiedä.

Varsinainen koru eurooppalaisten kaupunkien joukossa Krakova kyllä on.

Vuokrasin fillarin ja tutustuin paikkaan satulan päältä. Erityisen vaikutuksen teki vanha juutalaiskaupunginosa Kasimierz. Täällä muuten elokuvaohjaaja Steven Spielberg kuvasi filminsä "Schindlerin lista".

Hostel Deco löytyy kolmen ratikkapysäkin päästä rautatieasemalta. Decoon pääsee myös useilla eri busseilla, eikä taksimatkakaan kallis ole. Kävellen matka kestää vain n. 15 minuuttia.

Osuin Hostel Decoon sattumalta - varauksen järjesti varsovalaisen hostellini respa. Nyt ei sitten olekaan syytä etsiä muuta majoitusta Krakovasta.

Edullinen hintataso. Mahdollisuuksia löytyy alkaen omasta huoneesta kahdeksan vuoteen yhteismajoitukseen. Hintahaitari on leveä, kuitenkin kaikissa vaihtoehdoissa edukas.

Talo henkii sotien välisen ajan loistokkuutta. Korkeat huoneet, erittäin miellyttävät lautalattiat. Siisteissä huoneissa lumivalkoiset liinavaatteet ja mukavat jousipatjat. Nukuin kuin lapsi!

Sisustuksessa huoneet jännästi "teemoitettu" Kulta-Kauden Tähtien mukaan: Pola Negri, Tamara Lempicka, Marlene Dietrich, Josephine Baker, Greta Garbo, Coco Chanel ja muut ovat "läsnä" - oman huoneeni "teema" oli Charles Chaplin!

I was lucky to find Hostel Deco in October, 2006.

The first arrival to Krakow felt just like coming home: After Warsaw, a much more cosy, nice and peacefull city.

So much more history, culture, old buildings. Warsaw was so badly destroyed during the war, and the present hectic way of life in the Polish capital reminds you of some kind of American - style Moscow...

In Krakow one can still feel the old Central Europe. However, on the way here a fellow passager in the IC -train told that Generalissimus Josef Stalin had already issued an order to have Krakow destroyed. By chance, the story continued, the general in question was an architect by civilian profession, and somehow managed to avoid carrying out the order... True or false, hard to tell.

Anyway, Krakow is a pearl among Continental European cities. I rented a bike and got to know the city by cyckling around. One of the most impressive locations was the ancient Jewish Quartier of Kasimierz, where Steven Spielberg shot his film "Shindler's List".

Hostel Deco is situated three tram stops away from the railway station. You can reach the Deco also by using many different buslines. Even the taxi fare is not expensive, and you can walk to the hostel in only about 15 minutes.

Actually, I found the Deco by chance - my hostel in Warsaw made the reservation. Good for me - now it's not necessary to search for other accomodation.

Reasonable price-level. There are alternatives from single rooms to 8 -bed dormitories. Also the prices vary, but are affordable in every category.

The house itself breathes the bygone glamour the 1920's and 1930's. The rooms are high, with very pleasant wooden floors. The neat rooms have comfortable spring matresses with snow-white linen. I slept like a baby!

The interior decoration of the rooms features the spirit (by photos) of the Golden Age SuperStars: Pola Negri, Tamara Lempicka, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Josephine Baker, Coco Chanel and others are "present". The theme of my room was Charles Chaplin!

In the kitchen/breakfast room you find two free internet connections.
